How We Brighten Teeth With Whitening

Kansas City teeth whitening

We would like to help people enjoy smiles that fill them with confidence. To do so and also limit the risk of tooth sensitivity, we offer teeth whitening. In today’s blog, your Kansas City, MO, dentist talks about how we brighten teeth, often by up to eight shades, with a set of custom trays and a bleaching gel.

The Causes of Teeth Stains

Why do dark stains form on our teeth? They could be caused by several factors in our daily life, such as the use of tobacco products. Plaque buildup, which occurs due to improper or infrequent brushing and flossing, or a diet high in sugary foods and drinks with dark pigments, could make stains more visible. Lack of six month cleanings could be a case as well! Fortunately, we can use an at-home teeth whitening treatment to correct the issue and offer brighter smiles without the tooth sensitivity or the less-than-dramatic results of a store bought system.

At-Home Opalescence Treatment

You start with a brief visit to our office. We want to understand the cause and extent of your discoloration, and then we’ll take detailed impressions of your smile to create a set of plastic trays. You bring these trays home with you, along with a powerful bleaching gel. The gel-filled trays ensure even results across your smile, and prevent saliva from diluting it. You wear the trays for about 30 to 45 minutes a day over a period of one to two weeks. For many, teeth could be up to eight shades brighter! The trays and remaining gel are then yours to use if you touchups down the road. With a good oral hygiene routine, your new results can last for months to come!

Keeping Teeth Bright

If you want your new results to last, be sure to practice good oral hygiene. We recommend you brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and then again before going to bed. Each session should take two minutes and use a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure you floss before bed too! Try to avoid tobacco products, and cut back on sugary foods or drinks with dark pigments, like coffee, soda, red wine, and tea. Make time to see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning too! If you have any questions about how we brighten smiles or about what you can do to keep them that way, give us a call today!
