When you have crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, then your oral health could suffer, as could the appearance of your smile. To address your uneven smile, but to do so with a cosmetic approach, we could recommend Invisalign®. In today’s blog, your Kansas City, MO, dentist talks about the Invisalign® system.

Why You Need Orthodontics

When should you consider orthodontic treatment? If you have misalignment, even if it is very minor, then treatment could still help improve not only the beauty of your smile, but the overall health too. For example, did you know that uneven teeth could provide places for particles from your foods and drinks to stay trapped, even if you brush and floss? This means the risk of tooth decay and gum disease will only increase. If you have strain on your jaw joints and bite balance due to crooked teeth, then again painful issues could develop, this time TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). But with orthodontics, we can correct the smile with Invisalign®, using our custom and nearly invisible aligners!

Creating Invisalign® Aligners with iTero®

Each set of aligners you receive will be custom-made for your smile in particular. This provides a comfortable fit and treatment with precision and accuracy. Essentially, we will take detailed images and measurements so your smile with the iTero® system. Using a tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand, we will quickly and carefully gather images of the teeth from several angles. We then combine them to create a 3D computer model. This allows us to design and craft the aligners with better precision.

The Treatment Process

How do we use these aligners to shift the position of the teeth? Well, we will provide a series of our clear plastic aligners. A set is worn each day for 20 to 22 hours, over the course of two weeks. At this point, you begin wearing a new set. This process continues for about a year for adults, while teens may need around 18 months. These can also be removed before meals, so there is no need to alter your diet. Brushing and flossing is much easier with removable braces too, as you don’t have to work around brackets and wires.
